Are you a Nerd Gardener?

Are you a Nerd Gardener?

Top ways to know if you’re a nerd gardener:

  • You save every plant tag and have them organized in a binder.
  • You take notes on when you plant, what you plant and record outcomes and changes like a scientist.
The mighty love a binder or two. This binder had tabs for a printed database, drawings, nursery inventories and general reference and notes.
  • You keep a spreadsheet database and monthly blooming spreadsheet of all your plants and have it arranged by plants’ scientific names
  • You draw scale maps of your garden beds to keep track of what’s planted and growing where.

  • You keep plant reference printed and on hand in your garden binder because you’re really into organization and binders.
In the digital age I have still printed out reference material for easy access. Some of these materials were acquired in the very beginning of my search for native plants and information. When it’s all included in my garden binder it makes for a nice beginner’s guide.
  • You watch videos. You read books, magazines and articles. You take continuing education courses and go to workshops on gardening. You’re in a club.

  • You plan travel based around botanical gardens. You take photos in the hundreds of flowers, plants and gardens. It’s part of every vacation to appreciate the landscapes, natural and designed, along the way.

Bonus: You’re a compassionate nerd gardener if you actually talk to your plants and give them words of encouragement. Because everyone needs encouragement.

This nerd gardener established a new mostly Native Plant Bed last year. To find out more about the plants I’m using and how I designed the bed, check out this post here in A New Native Bed: Selection Process.
